HELP US SUPPORT YEZIDIS
NL helps Yezidis Foundation was established in 2014 with the aim of providing direct aid to Yezidi refugees in and outside Northern Iraq.
Yazidism has been around for more than 4000 years, its origin comes from Mesopotamia, land between two rivers Tigirs & Eufrat. They have adopted baptism and the belief in reincarnation from Christianity and Hinduism respectively. Because of this, the people have been hunted for centuries. In 2014, the Yezidis were brutally expelled from their towns and villages in northern Iraq by Islamic State (IS), often by the tens of thousands.
Young girls and women were kidnapped, raped and sold into slavery to IS rebels. Men, the elderly and boys have been captured or killed. Children became orphaned and displaced and deprived of any chance of education. You may remember the shocking images of thousands of Yezidis fleeing panicked up Mount Sinjar in August 2014. The international press still records such horror stories on a daily basis. Even today, many Yezidis still live in appalling conditions in UN tent camps in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

THE YEZIDA REFUGE WAHHAB HASSOO
Europe has taken in many Yazid refugees. Many thousands of refugees now live in the Netherlands and Germany. Because of the intensive contact with one of them, the NL Foundation helps Yezidis arise.
Wahhab Hassoo, a refugee Yazidi teenager, inspired us to set up the Foundation at the time. He has been living with his family (father, mother, a sister and two brothers) in the Netherlands since 2012. Wahhab is a special and talented young man. While many of his high school classmates fussed about going out, homework and the latest smartphone, he worked up a sweat – outside of school – to collect clothes and resources for refugees in northern Iraq and tried through the media. to draw attention to the situation in his home country.
This has resulted in many media appearances in and outside the Netherlands. Wahhab is now studying Global Politics at the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam. He is pursuing a career in politics and international relations. In addition, he has become one of the figureheads of the Dutch Yazidi community.
